Leftover Chinese’s Arctic Weekend Adventure

Having the luxury of a three day weekend, Ms. B and I made our way out of town for the second consecutive year. We have yet to learn our lesson about going away to colder places. Temperatures held steady around the zero degree fahrenheit mark while I gave Ms. B the tour. The picture above is from the frozen waters of Lake Mendota. During the four and a half years I spent in Madison, I never once set foot on the frozen lake; nor did I actually venture outside to face a negative 20 windchill. Ms. B. and I did the smart thing by deciding to step out to the ice AS cross country skiiers and 10 students converged on the same area of ice. Smart idea. Ms. B was the ultimate sport in facing the elements to see a place from my past.

Accompanying our burgers at lunch was a basket of fried everything: french fries, onion rings, mozzarella sticks, cheese curds, fried mushrooms, and macaroni and cheese balls. While the basket was a bit excessive, it’s the type of Wisconsin fare I never noticed as different until now. I feel like I’ve been short of breath since this meal.

I had to put my favorite professional football team’s defeat behind me, so I took the show to one of my favorite bars in Madison. The kids are looking younger and the Packer fans looked depressed. We escaped to the basement bar where things were a bit festive. Thanks to the wonders of the internet on cellphones, we taught ourselves how to play Pipelayer. After two tense games, we decided the game was much better than the ‘dot game’. Good times.

Happy Winter.
